Spreading the Word on Animal Protection Issues on The Ellen DeGeneres Show
Yesterday, I taped a segment on the Ellen DeGeneres Show about animal protection issues and the paperback launch of my book, The Bond: Our Kinship With Animals, Our Call to Defend Them. We closed the segment with yesterday's breaking news about the latest HSUS undercover investigation into inhumane treatment of laying hens at a battery cage egg facility, which is reverberating all over the country.
Birds at Kreider Farms: Take action now to help hens.
The news about Kreider Farms has been picked up in media outlets throughout the nation since Pulitzer Prize-winner Nicholas Kristof broke the story in his New York Times column yesterday. Brian Ross did a hard-hitting piece on ABC World News Tonight, following up on ABC’s series of reports on extreme and unsafe business practices by several outlier egg industry players.
Yesterday, in a number of forums, our staff members made the case for the passage of egg industry reform legislation: H.R. 3798 in the House (and a Senate companion bill is expected soon). This legislation would ban the barren battery cage and provide a much better path forward for egg farmers, consumers, and animals. We are backing it along with the United Egg Producers, the trade association for the egg industry, which represents 90 percent of all U.S. egg production. Pennsylvania’s Kreider Farms, the subject of our investigation, is not a member of UEP, and it crams birds into smaller spaces than even the industry norm. But the company has quickly become Exhibit A for why we need this important reform.
Please tune in today and spread the word about The Ellen DeGeneres Show, whose host is such an incredible ally to animals and friend to The HSUS. I love being with her, and so appreciated the opportunity to speak to the nation about critical animal protection issues and to activate people of conscience on the urgent issues of the day. And please let others know about the Kreider investigation and how it underscores the significance of the HSUS/UEP agreement.
